Harmony Foods fire damage on 25th and Becher, Milwaukee

Spent the last couple shifts at 26's.  Been some fun too.  Helped 12's burn down a garage.  Well, not completely.  The car inside was a total loss but the garage is standing.  For now.  Then, caught a first in fire at a convenient store off of 25th and Becher.  Was blowing out of what I would call a service door to the west as we were first to arrive.  Pulled off the rear and started making our way in.  Encountered a metal gate just inside which wasn't too difficult to get out of the way.  Once inside, our boots kept sinking into something.  Later we realized that it was plastic from the two liter bottles that were all over the place that must have melted down.  You should have seen the hose once we were done.  There was plastic melted onto many sections of hose.  Felt sorry, somewhat,  for whoever had to clean that shit off.  Anyway, assisted another company, Engine 31!, with tearing apart the room.  Was a good fire, but by this time, it was almost six in the morning.  And we've been up since 2am.  I was getting tired and ready to go home.

Nook Tablet

After having a few days with the Nook Tablet, I am pleased.  I compliment Barnes and Noble for coming out with a product that does what my family needs.  For example, my family and I have a desktop computer and a laptop.  But we don't use our desktop much anymore because of the convenience of our Dell laptop.  And when I'm gone for a day or two, I was looking for something that I would be able to check my email, surf the internet, get up to speed from local newspapers and just perhaps, sit down and read a book.  With the Nook Tablet, I now have that capability to do so.  The speed of the internet via Wi-Fi, is not bad.  Not as quick as our laptop with Pentium i5, but I really wasn't expecting it to be.  Searching for books and apps is straight forward.  I do like the fact that B&N Gift Cards can be uploaded to my Nook.  And also that there is a tally of how much on the card is left.  Very nice.

On the other hand, I do have a few gripes.  And these may not be Barnes and Noble's fault.  As a browser, the Nook Tablet is capable.  But, Facebook comes up like it does on my cell phone.  I admit that I like to play Family Feud daily and can not seem to be able to do so.  Was a little bummed.  Another would be that when I wanted to post on my blog, it would not allow me to do so.  I could start a new blog with a title, but the Nook did not allow me to type in any text for the body of my blog posts.  My last gripe would be on the manage Gift Card page.  After making purchases through my account, I wish that I could see what was bought on my Nook.  I later realized that an email was sent to my main account for what was purchased.  But it would be nice to have another tab to show list of purchases.  I only mention this because I believe I was charged for something that I wasn't aware of.  And still not aware of.

Now I will admit that I'm not the brightest when it comes to the in's and out's of electronics, but after a few days with my Nook Tablet, I am very pleased.  I'm hopeful that after some more time with my hands on the device, I'll be more excited about it's capabilities.

Maybe Six Times?

Damn we have some fun.  I've only worked with him no more than half a dozen times, but most of those, we caught some fires.  Happened again about 0600 on the 23rd.  I was already up from a previous run and didn't head back upstairs.  So off we went.  Towards Pine and Whitnall.

We arrived as the 3rd in engine company and as we approached the building, I saw some smoke, but not too much.  Then, once I got a little closer, there were flames blowing out the second floor rear window.  Ok then, that changes things.  Both lines were pulled off of E7 so were went to the rear and assisted pulling some line into the building.  We got upstairs and were informed that someone was still unaccounted for.  We searched, but did not find anyone throughout the second floor.  Soon, the fire was knocked down, bottles began to alarm and people headed out.  After using up our tanks and replacing them outside, we headed back in to overhaul.  I found it a little humorous that I was going back and forth with the nozzle hitting many hot spots.  Oh well.  Got back to 31's after out about two hours.  Was change of shift.  At least for everyone else.  This just ended the first half of my forty eight.

Eight Ball

Ever been to a nursing home?  They just have a certain odor to them.  And I just can't place it right now.  Well anyway, working at Engine 8 the other day, as I first stepped into the firehouse, a certain stench placed me right back into a nursing home.  Problem here.  I was walking into a place where I'll be spending the next 24 hours at.  Was told later that the odor that was destroying the lining of my nostrils was burnt beef and broccoli that was made two weeks prior.  Damn, two weeks!  I can only wonder what the smell would have been like.  Word on the street was they caught a run while making dinner and someone forgot to turn the stove off.  And when they returned, they had smoke banking down quite a bit.  That sucks.

As for the house, I noticed a lot of eight balls painted all around.  But as for the runs, we took five or six after midnight with the last a PNB which we pronounced at the scene 20 minutes before the end of our shift.  That wasn't much fun.  As for the engine, it was nice.  A Pierce Velocity that has had some transmission issues as of late.  Once I heard that, I was hoping we weren't going to need to change over during my shift.  Luckily, we did not.  Although we did take a drive down to the shop to get some new tires on the rig.  All's well that ends well.  Meaning...a good day is when everyone goes home.

Early Xmas!

Well, sort of...

Remember Lt. Dan from Forest Gump talking about taking care of your feet when he first met Gump and Bubba?  Well, I have taken that philosophy to the firehouse.  Last week I ordered my first set of leather boots.  Firefighting boots that is.  And yesterday, after getting home from Luke's, I got to see what all the noise about leather boots really was.  They actually fit like a shoe.  Firm and supportive.  Nothing like the rubber boots that I've been wearing for years.  I was quite surprised at how well they fit and thought "Why didn't I get these sooner?"  Back at 31's today with only one run in the books.  Just like any other new item that I purchase, I want to keep them looking good for a while.  Yet, I do know that they need to be broken in.

Along with the boots, I ordered the 87 Rescue Tool by Channellock.  There has just been too many times where I've needed a wrench for something where this tool would have come in handy.  Now, that's just one less thing I'll have to worry about.  Just a few early gifts to myself before the holidays.

It Won't Go Away

After nearly two years of neglecting it, and since the pain has come back on occasion, it only seems fit that I my shoulder seen.  I can recall almost exactly what was going on, and who was around.  Quite embarrassed in the moment, I did not want the pain to hinder my performance in the academy.  For now, it seems that I have no choice.  I must have it looked at, because it just won't go away by itself.  I guess I was hoping it would.

I'm optimistic that getting back into the routine of working out will do me some good.  Yeah, like it would really do me some bad, I think not.  But maybe, exercising will help me tolerate and not injure my shoulder anymore.

Frustrated

I can not believe there isn't more.  From all the yelling and screaming and punching and not listening, I thought I'd have more gray hair by now.  But surprisingly enough, my true color is standing tough.

Savannah,

You're getting big.  And talking so much more.  But you don't listen.  Well, perhaps sometimes you do.  I've been told that kids at the two and a half range are difficult.  Could also be that "terrible two" stage that I've been experiencing.  At times though, I just want to pull my hair out with you.  I really don't want to be the bad guy, but at times, I just have no choice.

On the bright side, I do enjoy how you ask for me to sit next to you when you do behave and are allowed to watch a movie.  And how you snuggle up close to me and fall asleep.  At times, you are adorable.  Here's to hoping that there's more of that coming as opposed to the cranky little girl that I've been dealing with a lot lately.

Big Red

Got the call that I would be driving Engine 31 yesterday.  Arrived this morning excited about getting behind the wheel.  But then, we sat.  And sat a little more.  Had a couple meals.  Started to get a pressure sore on my ass from all this sitting.  Am I at 31's or 14's.  Damn, this sucks.  And of course it has to be this slow today!!  And nothing in the late afternoon and early evening as well.  Then it happened.  EMS tones alarmed for the first time today at 930pm.  Ahh, nice to get that first run behind the wheel out of the way.

Head Shot

Did he know that is was coming?  Was there an argument or perhaps was he getting mugged before he took a bullet to the head?  Where was the shooter?  Damn, that's alot of blood!  When someone says that there was a pool of blood, now I'll have a good idea of what they mean.

Just a few lingering thoughts as we took care of this guy who isn't going to have a good Thanksgiving.  And that's how the night is starting out.  Turned in for the evening the earliest I ever have since I started this gig.  Just before ten.  Still awaiting another run as we will be returning to the scene to flush away that pool of blood.

Identification

Ok, so it's been a while since I've heard the phrase "unconscious unconfirmed" at 31's.  I bet you can guess what happened yesterday than.  Don't recall what time it was, only that it was dark out.   This guy was laid out in a bathroom on 13th.  Took us a while to wake him up, but when we did, he really wasn't much help.  More entertaining than anything else.  We kept asking for his ID, or identification.  After minutes of trying to get this guy to cooperate, he pulls a compact disc out of his pocket.  Scorpions.  But really!?!  We said ID, not CD.  Then, he must of been hungry cause he took the CD and put it in his mouth.  Must have looked like a donut.  MUNCHIES!!

Two Years

Has it really been that long?  I mean, where did the time go?  Two years ago, I recall how every morning we did "the routine."  The chopping, the climbing of ladders and the running.  I almost miss those days.  All we had to do was exactly what we were told.  And after fourteen weeks, the academy was over.  After that, I was sent out into the field.  South to 8th and Hayes.  I remember my first day out in the field like it was yesterday.  The co sleeping death we had before noon.  The car fire and getting to use the nozzle.  And the fact that it was Superbowl Sunday.  Colts versus the Saints.  Not that I watched the game.

And since that time there are still so many firehouses in the city that I have yet to work at.  In fact, here's a list. 1's, 6's, 8's, 9's, 10's, 13's, 16's, 18's, 21's, 22's, 25's, 32's, 33's, 35's, 36's, 37's and 38's.  That's seventeen houses that I haven't been at.  And now, staying in the fourth battalion, who know's how long it will be before I see any of those.  That is unless I write out of Truck 14.  But that I'm not planning on doing any time soon.

Red Oxx

To haul my gear around the city, I invested in some new bags.  And after doing some research, I stumbled across a company out of Billings, Montana.  Red Oxx Manufacturing.  And let me say that after six months having a few of their bags and packs, I can honestly say that I've never been so pleased.  I first bought their Ruck Sack, Nomad Shave Kit and a medium size Aviator Bag.

Since then, I've added a large Aviator Bag and a Rock Hopper.  Now I have two bags to haul my bunker gear, a backpack to haul extra clothing, and a small messenger bag for newspapers, magazines and books.  All perfect for my urban overlander.

Truck 14

After the usual morning cleanup, I began viewing online which firehouses were picked by those individuals with a higher seniority number than mine.  It seemed to go very well at first.  Many of my first picks were not even touched.  31's included.  I thought there was hope that I could stay right where I was at since I graduated from the academy.  But in the afternoon, that all changed.  One by one and shift by shift, my top picks were gone.  13's, 30's and 32's I did not even have a chance at.  I knew that going in.  Then it was 36's, then 5's.  Some others as well.  I couldn't watch anymore.  I was pacing around the firehouse.  Coming back to the screen I saw that Engine 6 was still available.  Perhaps?  Then around 1530, the rear phone rang here at 7's.  Gingery called to inform me what I already knew.  As he took the last spot at 5's, I had to decide on Engine 6 on the Blue, or Truck 14 on the Green.  So, after a long and agonizing day watching the "draft" unfold, I was fortunate enough to pick Rolling Thunder.  Truck Fourteen on the green.

At first, I was second guessing myself.  Engine 6 would have been really nice, but the Blue shift deterred me away.  Just too many holidays next year.  And the other, well, there was no downside to Truck 14.  The positives, well the green shift has only a couple holidays next year, the Captain is solid, I'd still be in the fourth battalion and now I'm even closer to home than 31's.  Here's to becoming a truckman.

Caterpillar Versus Pierce

During a typical afternoon in Lincoln Heights, we stopped over to the waterway project the city has going on off of 6th and Cleveland.  Boss took a couple shots of the process, plus a few dead fish.  But before we headed out, I took this shot of our Pierce Arrow XT and a Caterpaillar Excavator.  Nice, I thought.

Now, if I could just get some shots of her working.  She's had a little now.  I just haven't been around on those days.  But...it's coming, soon.

Look Who's One

Damn flu shot put me down and out the Thursday prior to Reed's party.  Thankfully, on Friday, I was on the road to recovery to get ready for my son's first birthday.  What a blast!

Reed,

My little buddy.  I can't believe a year has gone by.  With you, we celebrated your first birthday, surrounded by family and friends.  And then, just like the past year, the day was over.  Both you and your sister were tucked away in bed, getting some much needed sleep after a fun filled day.  There was food to eat and gifts to open.  But the best part of it all, was your little own cake.  I don't know which made me laugh more.  The way you picked up the cake and slammed it into your face, like you couldn't get enough.  Or, when you knew you were done with it, and tossed it on the floor.  Those moments were the hit of the party.  Oh yeah, I have a little secret to tell you.  It's nice to see some boys' toys around the house.  Now, in the evenings when it's time to clean up, I enjoy it a little more.  Picking up a couple Caterpillar toys, a lil' lawn mower and even Batman figures too reminds me why it's nice to have a little man around the house.  Once again, Happy Birthday Buddy!!

Love Daddy!

The next day I was back at 31's.  And after three busy days at home, it was funny that to take a break, I had to go to work.

"And that's a Vikings..."

"FIRST DOWN!!"

That got a little annoying after a while.  But you know what?  The end result was rewarding.  Packers victory in Minnesota.  And after attending Joel's Halloween Party the night before, I was needing a good reason to get up that early.  And to drive that far.  After drinking that much.  Period.

Downtown Minneapolis was very nice.  Looking around, the city seemed very clean with many places to go and things to do.  People can thank Target for that.  Hence Target Field and Target Center where the Twins and Timberwolves play respectfully.  Mall of America Field, where the Vi-Queens play, seemed much smaller than I expected.  But, I thought the same thing my first trip to Lambeau Field.

Side note though, New York so much better.  Can't seem to get off my NYC trip.

Sweet Ride!

Few different things I've wrote about in this damn thing.  Mostly though its been about the working out I haven't been doing, the Jeep that I have been working on or shit that's happening on the fire department.  Well guess what?  This one's not too far off either.  Searching around for bikes online, and yes, it is a hobby of mine, I came across this cruiser.  And let me tell ya, I love it.  Perhaps I can sell mine and get onto one of these next year?  How sweet would that be?

Anyway, back for another tour of duty tomorrow at 31's.  News about house picking came in the other day.  Can't pick 24's.  Pissed.  The department is making that the second HURT house.  Which I'm alright with, just disappointed about not heading up to 51st and Capital every third day.  Oh well.

Quick Visit

First day of a 48 here at 31's.  Been an interesting day.  DOA, PNB and a seizure plus man down.  Now this guy was hilarious.  Once J-Rod woke him up, he entertained us quite a bit.  Calling us everything under the sun.  Half of it I couldn't understand but smirked at some of his comments as we informed him that he could not sleep where he was at.  Just another moment where you just had to be there.

Wife and kids stopped by early evening.  Reed's been here numerous times, but this one was special.  He's never been able to run free on his own two feet while here.  I think he enjoyed it.

House Picking

In the a couple of weeks, the members of the department will be "picking" their house to work at for the next four years.  I'm a little nervous though.  I like being somewhat of a planner and have an idea of what's going on.  But right now, this process is not letting me.  I've heard rumors that my chances of staying somewhat busy are pretty good.  BUT WHERE!?!  Knowing that 13's, 30's and 32's will all be full by the time I step up and decide where to go, here's a short list of what I'm hoping will be available for me.  And a short reason why...

Engine 31
Why not?  Started out of the academy here and would love to continue.

Engine 24
Knowing that the HEO exam is coming soon, I'm guessing this is a good spot to be at.

Engine 36
Second busiest Engine Co. in the city in 2010.  Do I need to say more?

Engine 34
For some reason, I just like the house.  Another spot that will keep one honest.

Engine 6
Ok, so this one I just threw in for giggles.  Not the busiest of places, but after being in NYC, I loved how much foot traffic certain firehouse out there were around.  This is the closest I can relate to that.

And finally, a Squad Co.
Now this might just be the death of me, but what the department plans on doing with these squads is much different than FDNY.  Meant for only "squad" runs, hence the name.  Might just be one thing I can say I did if and when I ever take the Lieutenant's exam.

"Engine 31 In Quarters Available"

Was shortly after 12 and we were just finishing lunch when I picked up the ringing phone.  It was Chief Lipski from the shop wanting to talk with the officer.  My first thought, our new rig was ready for delivery.  Guess what?  It was.  Shortly, we were out the door and on our way to the shop to accept the newest engine to Milwaukee's fleet.  It is a thing of beauty.  Enjoy the photos.  (more to come)  I get to appreciate the real deal.

Fallen Axe Update!

After pulling the JK into the barn, we got talking about Jeeps.  And yes, how much I adore my Wrangler.  Then, a little light turned on inside my little pea brain.  A year ago today, is when we first brought home my 2010 Steel Blue Metallic Jeep Wrangler.  Can't believe it's been a year.  Quite a few changes have been made over the past year.  And this past week, there was another.

Long story short, Project Fallen Axe has some new shoes.  Tires that is.  And well, they're really not new either.  But to me they are.  Nate called to inform me about some used BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains, slightly used, for $100.  In 255/75/R17 none the less.  Exactly the size I wanted, for now.  Thanks to Corky's Tires in Cedarburg.

She's almost perfect.  Perhaps a few other minor details need to be added.  Still need a matching spare for starters.  Other than that, I'm at a loss.

Damn Blanket

"Early in the morning, risin' to the street"

Ok, so I really wasn't singing Sublime, but it was early in the am and off we went.  Working some OT at 31's, call came in as difficulty breathing.  Sure was!

Guy was slouched over next to his bed.  Very dusky too.  Oh boy, thought we had a PNB.  Not quite, but close.  I've never seen that bad of respiratory distress.  Perhaps in the ICU, but never out in the field.  Anyway, after we placed him on the stair chair, we starting working towards the door of the bedroom.  Now the blanket that was underneath him kept getting caught up in the wheels.  Sounds mundane I know, but important here.  As I picked it up.....WHAM!!!  The guy was slouching so far over the side of the chair, we slammed his face right into the side of the wall.  Oops.  A few moments later we were downstairs and placing him on the cot.  And guess what, he was coming around.  Funny to think that maybe it was him getting his face planted into the wall the helped him wake up.  Positive note though is that he was making an impressive recover from when we first got there.

And right after this run, took another where a baby was just delivered.  Got there, and yep, kid was there.  Extremely hairy little boy.  Anyway, I'm guessing the dad wasn't medically trained because he told us that after the baby came, he was trying to pull the umbilical cord out.  Really pal?  Anyway, boss cut the cord, got things stabilized and then they were off.

Was nice to have two legit runs during the night.

Simple Plan

Did those guys have any idea that they might not go home that day?  I can't imagine.  Getting off the rig, looking up and seeing so much smoke bellowing out of those towers.  You just wonder.

Standing on the ground where so many people perished, was a humbling experience.  My wife and I were there to honor the fallen from ten years ago.  It was an emotional, but good trip.  At the church across from Ground Zero, there was a book where people could write in.  Sheri suggested that I not read it only because she caught a glimpse on one excerpt that stated "I miss you daddy."  Hearing that I could only think of our two children.

The plan is simple.  When I work at Luke's, short visit to Bally's prior.  Started yesterday.

Well, after the trip to New York, things are going to change.  And it's starting today.

Two hours maybe.  That might have been my goal.  Discussed with my wife of how I can be a better firefighter while in the city.  Guess what, getting back into shape is just one of the many pieces of that puzzle.

Tears in New York

How many times have you been asked?

What were you doing on the morning of September 11th, 2001?

The past few days have been quite emotional as we embarked out to New York City to honor those who lost their lives ten years ago.  Everywhere we saw signs of patriotism.  And signs of support.

Look familiar?  How about Ecto-1 running out of this house?  Walking towards Ground Zero we just happen to come across this firehouse...Hook & Ladder 8 of the FDNY is actually stationed here.

It never crossed my mind while I was there to wonder how old the church was.  And on 9/11, it stood its ground as the world across the street came tumbling down all around.  Here are some tombstones just west of the front doors of St. Paul's Church.  I was offered to place a ribbon with a small, heartfelt note anywhere on the grounds that one day will be part of a quilt.

Took the boat ride to see The Statue of Liberty up close.  The city's size is impressive.  The tallest building in this photo is the new Tower 1 of the WTC, still under construction.

Just inside the doors of FDNY's Engine 8, Ladder 2 and Battalion 8.  One of many memorials we saw that weekend.

Just around the corner from Engine 54, Ladder 4 and Battalion 9, now stands a memorial fountain with the names inscribed on the sides.  Spoke with one firefighter from this house and was told that they lost the whole Battalion that day.  Sad to say, I'm sure they weren't the only one.

Just a glimpse of our trip to New York.  I guess I'm not surprised how just a short visit could inspire someone to change things about themselves.  I pretty much did the day we arrived home.  Thank you New York.

Travel Day

Take the good with the bad.

With the start of our vacation, we got to General Mitchell maybe a little earlier than we should have.  But we didn't care.  We were on our way to New York City.  Our "scheduled" departure time was 1244pm.  A two hour flight and boom, we would be in the Big Apple.

Yeah, that all took a shit quickly.  We ended up waiting until almost 4pm til our flight actually took off.  Damn, we spent almost six hours in the airport.  Ahh, but soon we arrived.  I'll tell you something.  LaGuardia is no General Mitchell, that's for sure.  A very cramped airport right on the bay.  Seemed dirty too.  Oh well, grabbed our stuff then a cab and over to Jersey.  After checking in at the Holiday, found Houlihann's for our 9pm meal.  Burger and fries.

Hoping to get into NYC at 4pm and possibly see some sites turned into a very long travel day.  But it's gotten much better.  To be continued...

21st & Lapham Fire

Been a few weeks since I've been on.  Trying to recall the events of the run.

Early morning (somewhere around 0630) fire tones went off.  Arrived on scene to find ourselves the third engine in.  Not sure, but we grabbed the rear ten and were ordered to get up into the attic.  I had the nozzle and was making my way through the house.  Finally found the stairs and ran into 12's going up.  There bottles were alarming so I told them we would take over.  I knew my boss was right behind me because I kept hearing his radio.

"31's, have you made the attic?  You gotta get up there or I'm pulling you out!"  Working our way up, I do recall how hot it was.  I also heard that there was fire in the basement and on the first floor.  And why we were trying to make the attic, I don't know.  Anyway, on the stairs, I felt like I was just getting pounded with heat.  I noticed a small window which I believe faced west that had been vented so I attempted some hydraulic ventilation.  Few moments later, I reached the landing of the attic.  Boss told me about some fire to the right, which I didn't see right away, but once I did, I pounded that wall with water.  Made our way towards a bedroom to the south, and in doing so, our line was getting caught up somewhere behind us.  I placed the nozzle down, and went back to get more line.  After what seemed like minutes of doing that and working the nozzle, our alarms started going off and then 32's showed up to take over.

Once outside, I tried to cool off.  But my heart was racing and I felt like I just couldn't recover.  Got some water in me.  A few more minutes went by, boss asked if we were ready.  As we went back over by the chief, Nick asked if I was ok.  I hesitated because I wasn't for sure.  I think he said that I didn't look so good.  They escorted me over to Med 3 where I was evaluated.  Yeah, a resting heart rate in the 160's.  Not so good.  I ended up being transported to Luke's where I had the joy of a different Nick, the RT, sticking me for an arterial blood gas sample.  What fun.

One other thing, I didn't mean to alarm her, but I don't think Sheri enjoyed my call to home.  With called ID, she answered thinking it might be the Hyperbaric Dept calling, asking if I could work today.  That changed quickly once she heard my voice.  "What's wrong?"

"I'm ok.  Just a little heat exhaustion."  I responded.  Soon, she arrived and after I was discharged, returned to 31's to grab my gear.  What a nice start to the day.  It ended good too.  I got a new phone, the HTC Merge.  Which I love!!

Oops!

I heard "mantastic" coming up the stairs and knew it could only mean one thing.  He was going to workout a little.  Knowing that, I quickly changed and joined in.  Much easier when there's someone else.  Surprised by how quickly time went by.  Felt good throughout.  But anyway, after the day was done, I forgot one important thing.  My 100 pushups for the day.  I woke this morning upset with myself realizing that I did not do them.  So, today I doubled the amount of Mr. Pushups that had to be done.

Three Stooges Out Again

8/12
Started at the palace in West Allis, otherwise known as my parents house, with Brad and Leif for a morning ride.  Headed southbound on the Oak Leaf all the way down to Milwaukee County Sports Complex just off of Ryan Rd and back.  Was just shy of 30 miles for the ride, so I continued northbound to Bluemound and then back home.  Really curious how many calories I burned on this ride.

Discipline

Another tool for the tool box.  Referring to another quality product from Red Oxx.  A smaller pack that we'll use for our trip to New York City, among other places, that I shall be receiving soon.  A little bummed that the Rock Hopper is on back order, but for an American made product, I guess good things come to those who wait.

I haven't missed a day since I started.  And today wasn't going to be any different.  100 done for eighteen days straight now takes discipline.

Arctic Circle

8/8
Oh boy.  Pulling up on scene to an "Uncontrolled Bleeding," police officers were waving us down.  That's not good I thought.  Turned out to be a young kid that got chewed up by a couple pit bulls.  Like he was a rag doll.  Quite a few puncture wounds to the arms and legs, but nothing around the neck and no arterial bleeds, at least from what we saw.  Interesting start to the day.

Hit the trainer upstairs in what I'm calling the arctic circle.  The last few weeks, the a/c unit has been running non stop.  Guys from the shop came by to check a few things out and informed us that is was 63 degrees upstairs.  A little hard to workout when it's that freaking cold, but Rob and I did get some saddle time in.  Did some interval workouts, both on the bike and by taking a couple runs.  Oh, and heart rate monitor froze up on me.  Something perhaps with the arctic air upstairs, I don't know.

The Other One

Yes, there is another one in the family.  Besides Fallen Axe, a 2010 Jeep Wrangler JK, there also is the family Jeep.  The family XK.  Our 2008 Jeep Commander that we bought new a few years back.  Its main duty is to haul those little monsters around town.  And has stayed mostly stock.  I say that now with no intentions of changing anything, but being a multi-Jeep owner, we'll see how long that lasts.

"Nemo?" she asks as she points to the Tv.
"Yes honey, you can watch Nemo."

I don't know how many times I've watched Toy Story, Shrek, Cars or Finding Nemo.  Alot I guess.  Having a two year old in the house who just loves her Disney movies does that to me.  There's one point in Finding Nemo where Dory suggests to Marlin "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming" as they head deeper into the darkness of the ocean.  Yesterday I took that same idea.  Sort of.  Instead, as I took Thor out for a late evening ride, I left the driveway thinking, just keep spinning.  Knowing that it was already dark out, I still wanted to get a few miles in just to clear my head from the days events.

A very easy spin, in fact so easy, I didn't even shift into the big ring.  Out to the fair grounds, to main street and home.  A very short and easy spin.

Culver's

While driving out to Brookfield yesterday, I caught a glimpse of three letters on the Culver's sign in West Allis.  "RAV."  Right away, I guessed Cookie Dough Craving as the flavor of the day.  And wouldn't you know it, I was correct.  Now, I'm depressed about the sign.  We have gone to Culver's for treats so many times that now all I have to see is just a couple of letters to know what the flavor is.

Glad I've been getting on the bike.

072511 Tour

Goals.  People talk about goals and how they want to achieve them.  I believe Aaron Rodger's goal was to win a Super Bowl.  Well, he can check that one off the list.  But what goals do I have?  Perhaps just get the heart pumping, even a couple of minutes, everyday.  Starting with 100 in 100.  A hundred pushups everyday for one hundred days.  Started yesterday, the 25th of July and would end Nov 1st.  Just in time for indoor BMX.

I thought I forgot what it's like to ride.  And, how enjoyable it can be.  No distractions.  Just a breath of fresh air, literally.  Yesterday I recalled that feeling as I took Thor (the name I've given my road bike) out.  Headed eastbound to KK, to Oklahoma and back.  Received a decent headwind coming from the west on my way home.  I felt like a kid again.

Marshall Creek Fire ready for inspection

United Hook & Ladder Company, wondering where's the steps go?

Schiller Park Fire taking a hydrant perhaps?

South side been getting some work lately.  Question is how long will it last?  Anyway, only a few months left before my senior man retires.  I've gained alot of knowledge from Greg, and will miss our conversations in the firehouse.  Our talks remind me of the talks Capt Algren and Katsumoto had in the film "The Last Samurai."

Hooked on a Feeling

You ever get that feeling where you just want to punch someone in the f***ing throat?  It's a great feeling, isn't it?  Or perhaps there's more than one annoying you?  As I just sit here and shake my head, I wonder how some people can be so two faced?  "How you doing buddy?  And the kids?"  I hear that and it just seems to be someone that needs to fill the quiet air.  I really don't think they care about any of that.  And at times, all I hear is "blah, blah, blah!"

I wish I didn't feel this way, but sometimes just the right buttons get pushed.  And I wish I wasn't so nice at times as well.  Perhaps I need to be the asshole?

Pizza Dough #1

Made my first homemade pizza the other day.  Went alright.  I plan on posting how I put it together to see what changes I can make to get a better taste.  The first one was good, but the misses said I rolled it out a little too thin.
  • packet of quick rising yeast
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 cup of warm water (had no thermometer - looking for a temp around 110 degrees F)
Mix the flour, salt and sugar together.  Mix yeast and water together, then add to flour mixture.  Add vegetable oil.  Knead until smooth roll.  Smear with oil and set aside.  Cover with towel for approximate 3 hours.

If possible, next time sift flour one cup at a time into yeast mixture then knead.  Try adding seasonings as well.

That Sucks!

Fire tone alarms.

Out the door we go and as we cruise down 27th street, we're waiting to hear the first in size up.  Finally we arrive on scene.  As I got off the rig, I saw that E17 and T8 were already there.  Walking up to the corner house, I saw a good amount of smoke coming out of the front door.  I then noticed that one of my instructors from the academy was also geared up talking to the chief.  Anyway, the boss directed us to head in.  Got down and started to mask up, and as I turned my bottle on, I heard a loud pop followed by a hissing sound coming from the rear of my pack.  I turned it off and tried to tighten the connection.  Turned the bottle on again, and the same hissing sound came back.  "What the hell!" I thought.  Frustrated, I began to get my pack off to see what was happening.  At this moment, another air pack was tossed over to me.  Really?  This had to happen right in front of one instructors?  Anyway, grabbed his pack and got squared away.  Went inside to rejoin the rest of my company.  Did a little work, but was more pissed of the event that just happened.

A while back, a HEO told me to make sure that the rig is ready to roll before any house work is to be done.  I couldn't have agreed with him morning.  On this day, I did that.  Now if I didn't check my mask in the morning, I would willingly admit that I didn't check it.  But I did.  There was no issues with my pack during my morning check.  So what the hell happened?  Later I was told that it was my O-ring that popped off.  Probably because the connection came loose.  Yep, that sucked.

Gets better.  A few hours later, the phone rings.  A neighbor called saying that someone left a fire coat on scene.  When I heard, this, I sprinted out to the truck to make sure that mine was there.  Thankfully, it was.  It turned out to be the captains coat.  And boy, did he hear about it from the guys.

Just another day in what the department calls the quarters of E23 and T14.  Paradise in the Park.

Remember the Steps

Only one day left.

Asked my boss the other day if I could get over to a truck company to become orientated with driving and working the stick.  He obliged me and sent me to Truck 14 for three days.  Sad to say that tomorrow is my last "scheduled" day there.

First two went pretty well.  Got most of the steps down to get the aerial up.  Took some time but getting close.  Just have to remember that everything I touch has a purpose.  And to think of what's actually going on with every button or lever pressed or pulled.

Took a few runs as well.  Been extremely hot and humid the last few days.  Had an infant locked in a car for over ten minutes by the time we got there.  Boss gave us two minutes to wedge and unlock the door.  If not, a window was going to crumble.  Good news.  Saved the window and the child as we were able to unlock the old Toyota's door.

Got a fire on the far south side later that day.  More on that in my next post.

What Rider?

I've been following the Tour De France for maybe the last ten years.  I'm amazed at the sprint finishes and shocked at how fast some riders can climb.  This year I have something else to be surprised about.

I heard something about a crash, but didn't hear any details.  Watching a recorded (have to love DVR) Stage 9, my jaw dropped when I saw what happened.  A damn French television car slid into one of the riders on the lead breakaway group.  Really?  Stupid Frenchman.  You in such a f***ing hurry for something?  Even though the stage takes over four hours?  One rider slammed into the ground while another crashes into a barbed wire fence.  Nice job Frenchy!!

Yeah, you get the idea of what a barbed wire fence can do to a man's leg.

Good news though.  The next day for the riders was one of rest.  Much needed for some.  Just remember, pain is temporary, pride is forever.

Streak Continues

And the streak goes on.

What streak you may ask?  You know, the one that has been dragging out for the last 15 months.  One where two individuals on the same crew not seeing something that, as firefighters, should see.  The one that includes my boss and I working together and NOT getting a first in fire.  Yep, that's it.

When will the streak end?  Or will it even end?  At the end of the year, I most likely will no longer be on Engine 31.  And no longer working with the crew that I've learned quite a bit from.

The next few days I'm going back to Truck 14.  I spent a few days there last year to learn a little about the truck.  This time around, I'm more interested in getting signed off on the truck.  HEO exam is less than 18 months away.  Plus, the south side has been burning up a lately, so I'm liking my chances of getting some work.  Here's to hoping.

This Fall?

It's never too early to think about next race season.  Especially since I haven't been in a start chute since last May.  Perhaps I'll even find myself in one this fall.  So, with wanting to get back into the swing of things, I'm considering adding a new member to the stable.  But looking at all the bikes I have, there's just something missing.  Lets see, I have a full suspension, a single speed, a road bike and my faithful bmx cruiser.  Hmm...it seems that I'm in need of a 29er.  Yep, that's it!

So after comparing a few different models, I think I'm looking at getting a Salsa El Mariachi.  The bike has gotten rave reviews from many resources.  Sure, I looked at the Niner brand, but the cost of a complete bike is just too much for me to spend.  Even with a discount.  I also feel a need to get away from Trek for some reason.  Nothing against the brand, just not what I want anymore.

Salsa El Mariachi

Obviously, the pic here is only the frame.  But I would order a complete bike.  Also, there would be some options to be had as well.  Here's to seeing you out there.

Saddle Sores

Fifty-Six.

That's the number or races that I've done from 2000-2010.  At least the number of results I can find online.  And these are only WORS, or the Wisconsin Off Road Series.  I have done a few in WEMS, also known as the Wisconsin Endurance Mountain Series.  But only a few.

Just a few years ago, I was informed about a bmx track to be built at Crystal Ridge.  Today, the track is either called Milwaukee BMX or Cream City BMX.  There, I have somewhere between 5-10 races on my twenty-four inch cruiser.  To add experience on my bmx, I've traveled to Elkhorn where an indoor track is built each winter.  I can only smile about my adventures there.  With all the slush and snow outside, it's always a blast to get into the starting gate and go all out and a very smooth track.

In this year of 2011, I only have one race under my belt.  That being at Elkhorn.  Will there be more races?  Well, I have my Trek Fuel EX 9, Trek 2.1, GT Peace singlespeed and my little GT Power Series 24 to choose from.  Right now, I like my chances of racing again sometime this year.

Sunday Routine?

Morning started off like most others at 31's.  Came in, got my gear on the rig, checked over the EMS equipment and made sure everything else on the engine was squared away.  Just a normal start to the day.

Having about 16 months out in the field now, I have gotten a good feel for a typical day at 31's.  A few runs during the day, and almost one after midnight.  But every once in a while, the locals in Lincoln Heights surprises me.  And yesterday was one of those days.

We were doing it!  We took a couple runs before the big one came in.  And I wish I meant big one as a large inferno.  Nope.  Call comes in as a "fell now stuck in porch."  Upon arrival, we find an extremely large man with a good cut to his leg...stuck.  We needed some help because there was no way we could handle this guy alone.  Turned into a HURT and Bariatric Response.  Was pretty interesting.  12's crew came in and took care of business.  They were able to extract him from the rotten porch and with the help of 10-12 guys, used a modified 4x8 to carry him to the cot.  It was an impressive run to have that good of coordination between everyone involved.

After that, we spent the afternoon helping some other folks out.  Babysat a guy who smoked some K2, but before we got back to 31's, dispatched sent us to a...wait for it....yep, a house fire on 25th and Lincoln.  Sweet!  We saddled up and flew down the avenue to supply Engine 23's.  Took a 2nd line off but didn't do anything with it.  We went up to the 2nd floor and pulled some walls.  The funny thing about this run is that dispatch stated there were multiple callers and person/people jumping from the second floor.  I saw the guy that jumped.  Wow.  He looked shitfaced.  And as I suspected, I found out he was.  My uneducated guess is that he fell asleep smoking on the couch.  Oh well.

The best part?  The night didn't even start yet.  Took a few more and then hit the pillow around 11pm.  Got a few hours of sleep.  Until we met Mickey.  After her, we got back to back garage fires off of 6th street.  Neither one was special, both fairly small.  Anyway, we finally got back to quarters and in bed shortly before 5am.

Like they told me coming out of the academy.  "31's, you'll see a little bit of everything."  Yesterday, we certainly did.  Looking forward to what's next.  Hopefully not another 700lb plus man though.

Look Who's Two!

Another memorable day.

June 25th, 2011

Savannah,

It may seem somewhat redundant, but it feels like just yesterday we were celebrating your first birthday.  And now, you're two.  I was a little concerned with the weather the morning of your party.  Quite a heavy downpour it was.  But soon, the sun came out, your cousins Max and Cole arrived and off you went.  From playing on your new gift...the Little Tike's Rock and Slide play set to splashing water off over the place from the bottled water tub.  You got your grandma pretty good too.  I placed the tub just outside of the garage, and "BAM!"  You slammed your hand hard into the water that it looked like a fountain spurting out of the tub.  With her back towards it, your grandma got showered.  It was a well executed plan.  And of course, we all laughed.  Soon your party was coming to a close and after receiving numerous strollers, countless clothes and even a Woody doll from Dustin, we had to say goodbye.  After getting back from taking your grandpa home, I peeked in your room where you slept peacefully.

Just a glimpse on your second birthday...

Love Daddy!

Boys' Doing Alright

"Peanuts, $4!"

We couldn't stop laughing.  Carlos placed one of the vendors signs just below his belt and kept yelling out "peanuts, $4!"  With his accent, "peanuts" sounded more like....well, use your imagination.  Was quite hilarious.

Was our 2nd time participating in the annual Brewer game with 31's.  We had some laughs and some heartaches too.  Brewer's didn't play very well and lost to Tampa Bay 8-4.  On the flip side, it was nice to see John and the Lt.  Was the first time I've seen the Lt since the morning of the Lincoln Ave fire.  He looked a little older with a full goatee, but otherwise good.  Up and moving around.  Being one of my lead instructors at the academy, I was pleased to see how well he was doing.

Where'd You Go?

This post is for you my little man.  I previously said I would write you and I don't want to be a father that is known to have empty promises.

June 14th, 2011

Good evening my little monster.  How you have changed so much the last few weeks.  For a while, you mother and I thought that you would be like me and take your time with things.  Well, we thought wrong.  Last week while in Las Vegas, your grandmother informed us that you started crawling.  Really?  You couldn't wait until we got home?  Oh well.  I'm not upset.  But now, when I'm at home with you and Savannah, I'll place you on the living room rug and leave you to play with your toys.  I'll leave the room for maybe three minutes and then "poof!" you disappear.  The funny thing about all this is that almost every time, I'll find you in between the chair and a half and the bay window.

You know what else, you're almost eight months and still not sleeping through the night!!  Yet you surprised me again.  It was about 4am and you were upset.  Crawling out of bed, I found myself stumbling into your room.  And there you were.  Sitting up and as you glanced over at me, I swear, I haven't seen that big of a grin from you since you were born.  I just smiled, picked you up and gave you a bottle.  What a nice start to the day.  An early day at that.

Love,

Daddy

Well, almost midnight here at 31's.  I guess I should try and get some sleep.

A Letter to Savannah

It was needed.  With my feet up and head on a few pillows, I was recovering from a typical night in Vegas.  Yep, much drinking involved.  So we had the TV on and we're relaxing before we headed out for another night out on the town.  So what caught my eye was a commercial that depicted a child's events as they grew up using YouTube.  Both pictures and videos.  But was most unique of all was each one was written as if a letter to this child.  My wife and I both agreed how great of an idea that was.  So here today, I'm going to try and accomplish something similar.

June 12th, 2011

Good Afternoon Savannah,

How you amaze me sometimes is unbelievable.  Your mom and I came back from Las Vegas yesterday and when we walked into the house, you were still napping.  It was a good thing too because we were both hungry and brought home some Taco Bell.  But soon you woke up, and cracked open your door.  You saw us then smiled ear to ear.  You came over and gave us both a big hug.  It was nice to see that.  Also, you woke up smiling and not upset.  It was a wonderful welcome home.

Then last night at Leif's graduation party, you and I played bags for a little bit.  One of your first tosses, you threw the bag overhand and made it in the hole.  But, after I applauded your effort, most of your other tosses involved you climbing onto the board and just shoving the bags into the center hole.  Then as we were saying goodbye to everyone, you were nothing but a ham.  Smiling and giggling, but better yet, you kept whispering and acting all silly.  Like I said, you amaze me sometimes.

Today I'm at the firehouse, and I look forward to seeing you in the morning.  Hopefully, I'll be able to put your birthday gift together.  The Little Tikes Rock Climber and Slide.  Happy early birthday.

Love,

Daddy

And no Reed, I didn't forget about you.  You'll soon receive a letter from me as well.

MFD Close Call

This past Friday, guys from Engine 31, my firehouse, were dispatched to a reported house fire on 15th and Lincoln Ave.  Upon arrival, police officers informed them that there were children trapped in the attic.  Right now I don't have any more details until what happened next.

As the company was working in the attic, a door was opened and a flashover occurred, burning both Lt. Schutte and firefighter Kokalj.  Caught on video shows both individuals falling out of the burning structure through a front window.  "I was burning up."  At one time, they both thought that there 3rd firefighter was dead.  Fortunately he wasn't and was able to make it out another way.  Sitting here now, I just thank the Lord that they were able to get out alive.

The badge shown above is one used for firefighter memorial deaths.  Again, I thank God that the city of Milwaukee did not have to have this image posted anywhere because of this past Friday's fire.  This is the first time during my short career that guys I work so close to were in such danger.  What would I have done?  How would I have reacted?  I really don't know.  I guess that's why we put so much trust in one another to not let anything happen.  I mean, this was the crew that came in that morning and relieved me.  Kokolj brought in donuts for everyone.  It was a nice start to the day.  But I'm also glad that it had a decent ending.  No black badge to be seen.

2011 Memorial Day

Memorial Day 2011.  Walked into 31's and was greeted by a bare chested man, who just happen to be my Captain.  "Matthew Byrge," he said, followed by "Or should I say HEO Byrge."

Yep, acted as the HEO this past holiday.  Was a pretty busy day, at least around meal times.  Took three runs while trying to eat lunch, followed by an afternoon lull.  Then once the evening hit and we were about to sit down and eat, again, we took three more runs.  Really?  It happens more often than not to Greg when he cooks.  Seems like half the time he's the chef for the day, we do not get a chance to sit down and eat peacefully.  Oh well, that's part of the job.  Kind of funny though.

Got the call last night that I'd be going to Truck 13 today.  Enthused by going up that way knowning that Engine 24 / Truck 13 is one of the engine houses I wouldn't mind working at once the next picking comes around.  Anyway, got to work and was bumped over to the engine.  Whatever.

"I Blame the Astronauts!"

I guess it just doesn't happen to much to me.  At the hospital, I like to make small talk with patients and family members to help pass the time by.  An easy topic to discuss is always the weather.  Or so I thought.  I spoke to one lady a few days back, about how I can't believe that it's almost June and we still have weather in the 40's and 50's.  Well this lady had her own thoughts on why the weather has been so shitty.  So says, verbatim, "I blame the astronauts...the Lord didn't intend to have all that stuff placed on the moon...not suppose to be there."  Wow.  Now I didn't know if I was that surprised by her answer or the fact that she actually thought this out.  What do you say after that?  I don't recall what I said, but I was quickly on my way to find some busy work.  Who knows what else this lady had thoughts on that I just might bring up.

KC Lights Install

All I needed was a little direction.  With my father in law's help, we layed everything out and figured what went where.  After he instructed me on what needed to be done, I spent a few hours taking my time to get everything squared away.  I was frustrated at certain times, but once I got going, my frown flipped over as I was excitied once the lights were operational.

On this view of the engine bay, running from the passenger to the drivers side towards the rear, there are green and white wires that are used for the switch inside the cab.  Once everything was connected and the lights were powered up, 1/2" conduit was used with numerous zip ties to clean up the inside of the engine compartment.

The battery terminal area was my most difficult spot.  Two holes where drilled through just above and to the left of the battery for the relay and a ground connector.  In the photo, the white and yellow wiring were mounted to the positive side of the battery.

On the driver's side, there is a removable panel, which is where I was able to feed the green and white cables through.  Note, the opening was made through some foam insulation, and after an opening was made, fishing the wires through was no problem.  No drilling required!

Here is a view of inside the cab after installation was completed.  The on/off switch was mounted below the steering wheel on a removable panel which made placing the hardware a much easier task.  Also, I removed the stock ground connector for one slightly larger then used one of the two screws that are to the left of the pedals.

After a four hour evening of getting the lights wired up and working, I was pleased.  Two days later, while at the firehouse, I spent another two hours concealing all the exposed wire and cleaned up everything else.  And guess what?  They still worked after I got done with everything.

What's Next?

With a little down time at home or work, it seems that my mind drifts off into the world of Jeeps.  Why the hell do I love them so much?  I mean I love these rigs as much as a fat kids loves cake.  Now I can only dream that one day, Project Fallen Axe will be as sweet as the rig you see above.  But hey, I'm realistic.  I only really want to do just a few more modifications to my JK.  Now, after having the new front and rear protection all mounted up, those stock tires just look out of place.  What is a man to do?  My only options for tires would be either the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac or the BF Goodrich Mud Terrains.  These two are the only ones that I would be happy with that come in the stock size of 255/75/R17.

  • 75 represents the length from the rim to the tread pattern
  • R17 designates the rim size diameter

Hyperbaric Oxygen

delivery of the new chamber in April of 2008

Working for 24 hours and then being off for 48 has some benefits.  Some include having to drive to work only once every three days, get things done such as yard work or doctor visits during the week and most importantly, spending time with my kids.  It does have some disadvantages as well.  For instance, just being away from family as well for 24 and even sometimes 48 hours.  But the good out weighs the bad.  For me, I get a couple days a week with the little ones, but also work part time as a Hyperbaric Technician at St. Luke's Medical Center.

I've been with Aurora since 2000, and have had a few different roles.  And right now, I don't plan on changing that anytime soon.  Working as a Hyperbaric Tech a few days here and there is great for my family and me.  It has given me the opportunity to purchase my new toy, Project Fallen Axe, back in September of 2010.  Below are just some photos of our new department.
