Ever been to a nursing home? They just have a certain odor to them. And I just can't place it right now. Well anyway, working at Engine 8 the other day, as I first stepped into the firehouse, a certain stench placed me right back into a nursing home. Problem here. I was walking into a place where I'll be spending the next 24 hours at. Was told later that the odor that was destroying the lining of my nostrils was burnt beef and broccoli that was made two weeks prior. Damn, two weeks! I can only wonder what the smell would have been like. Word on the street was they caught a run while making dinner and someone forgot to turn the stove off. And when they returned, they had smoke banking down quite a bit. That sucks.
As for the house, I noticed a lot of eight balls painted all around. But as for the runs, we took five or six after midnight with the last a PNB which we pronounced at the scene 20 minutes before the end of our shift. That wasn't much fun. As for the engine, it was nice. A Pierce Velocity that has had some transmission issues as of late. Once I heard that, I was hoping we weren't going to need to change over during my shift. Luckily, we did not. Although we did take a drive down to the shop to get some new tires on the rig. All's well that ends well. Meaning...a good day is when everyone goes home.
